About Katsuragi City
Katsuragi city was established on 1 October 2004, from the merger of the towns of Shinjo and Taima. Katsuragi City is situated in the northwestern part of Nara Prefecture, covering an area of 33.73 square kilometers, with a population of 37,000.
Blessed with a rich natural environment, it includes the mountainous area in the west, the mountains of Mt. Nijo, Mt. Iwahashi and Mt. Katsuragi. The east side of Katsuragi City includes the commercial and residential areas with National Route 24, railway stations and the Katsuragi river. The climate is generally mild and is classified as an inland climate. The temperature change during the day can be wide. It is hot in summer and cold in winter with a little bit of snow.
Katsuragi City has a rich history and is known for being connected to many famous Princes, Princesses and poets. Some of their tombs can still be found and visited in Katsuragi-city today.
Katsuragi City`s most famous attraction is the Taimadera Temple. It is the only temple in Japan to have its original two pagodas which date from around AD 710. Contained with Taimadera are three national treasures, including the Taima-Mandala.
Other popular tourist attractions include Kehayaza Sumo Pavillion which is said to be birthplace of sumo wrestling, the Takenouchi route which was the first national route in Japan, and an Imperial Mausoleum for Empress Iitoyo, who was the first empress of Japan.
