Group of Mitsuzuka Tumuli (Mitsuzuka Kofungun)
The Mitsuzuka Kofungun was discovered when the land was being investigated to construct the Minami Hana Route. It was built not on top of the ridge, but on the southern slope.
The construction period of these tumuli was from the end of the 6th century to the end of the 7th century. Other old tombs made in the 9th and the 10th centuries were also found in the area.
A remarkable relic concerning international relationships was excavated from one of these tumuli. It is called ”The Lacquered Leather Bag”, one of the burial accessories from the end of the 7th century.
The leather bag is box-shaped and has the length and width of about 20 centimeters. It has a petal-shaped metal ornament in the center and a metal buckle to hold a belt.
This leather bag is estimated to have come from Tang, (China). If this is the case, it is proof that there was a person who went to China and got buried in one of the tumuli.
