【国際交流】オーストラリアへようこそ

 6メートルの大きいイリエワニや、珍しい可愛い動物がいっぱい。日本の南方向にある大陸「オーストラリア」へようこそ。
オーストラリアは総面積で世界の6番目に大きい国で、日本の約20倍です。でも、オーストラリアの人口は2548万人で、日本の1億2644万人の人口と比べて五分の一です。本当に広い国です！
 オーストラリアは8つの地域に分かれていて、6つの州（ビクトリア州、ニュー・サウス・ウェールズ州、クイーンズブレイド州、西オーストラリア州、南オーストラリア州、タスマニア州）と二つのテリトリー（ノーザンテリトリーとオーストラリア首都特別地域）があります。首都のキャンベラは、奈良市と姉妹都市になっていることを知っていますか？

地理

 オーストラリアは平坦な大陸で、大部分（70％）は乾燥地帯または砂漠で、「ザー・アウトバック」と言われます。それでも、北東の方向には熱帯雨林があり、東側には山脈が延び、多様な生息地があります。
 極端に変化する気象パターン、および長期的な地理的孤立のため、オーストラリアの生物の多くは、固有なものです。特に、有袋類が多く、皆の好きなカンガルーとコアラはその一つの部分です。

気象

 国の北部の大部分は、熱帯で、二つの季節があり（乾季と雨季）夏の時に降雨（モンスーン）がよくあります。私の出身（メルボルン）と南部はちゃんと四季があります。日本より気温が高いけど、湿気があまりないのでよかったです。冬の時は雨が程々降ります。都市で雪は降らないですが、山では降ります。スキーもできます。

多文化の国

 元々1770年にイギリスに植民地にされましたが、第二次世界大戦後でたくさんの人が色々な国からオーストラリアに難民として来ました。今は多文化の国で、半分の人は、海外で生まれたか、生まれはオーストラリアだけど、両親のどちらかが海外生まれです。様々な異文化な人と交流ができることは、オーストラリアのもっともいいところだと思います。それに様々な国の食べ物が楽しめます！

観光

 立派な自然があふれていて、有名な観光地はグレート・バリアー・リーフ、ウルル、グレート・オーシャン・ロード、シドニー・オペラ・ハウスなどです。もちろん、皆はオーストラリアの可愛い動物を見に行きたいでしょう。

アートや音楽や食事の方が好きだったら、メルボルンやシドニーで面白いところがいっぱいあります。機会があれば是非オーストラリアに来てください！

Welcome to Australia

Welcome to the land down under where we have strange looking cute animals and large saltwater crocodiles. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and is approximately 20 times larger than Japan. However, Australia’s small population of approximately 25 million people is about 1/5th of the Japanese population.

Australia is divided into 6 states (Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Southern Australia and Tasmania) and two territories (Northern Territory and the Australian Capital territory). The capital of Australia is Canberra. Did you know, Canberra is sister cities with Nara city？

Geography

Australia is a relatively flat land, with 70% of the land consisting of desert or semi-arid conditions. Despite this, there are tropical rainforests in the north east and mountain ranges in the east side giving rise to many unique habitats.

As a result of the severe weather patterns and Australian’s long isolation as a country, there are many unique animals that are indigenous to Australia. In particular, there are many marsupials, including everyone’s favorite kangaroo and koala.

Climate

The northern parts of Australia receive tropical weather with two distinct seasons (dry and wet season) and in summer they often experience monsoons. In the Southern parts of Australia we experience four distinct seasons including Melbourne where I am from. In summer we don’t get much humidity and even though the average temperature is higher than Japan, it’s much more comfortable. In the winter, we get moderate rainfall. It doesn’t snow in the city but we do get some snow up in the mountains where you can go skiing.

A multicultural society

In 1770, Australia was originally colonized by England. However, after World War II, many refugees from all over the world immigrated to Australia and as a result Australia is now a very multicultural country. Nearly half of all Australians were either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas. I believe the fact that we can live and share our experiences with people from many diverse backgrounds is one of the best points about living in Australia. Not to mention all the great food we can eat!

Tourism

Australia is known for it’s unique and impressive nature. Some of the main tourist attractions in Australia are the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, the Great Ocean Road, and the Sydney Opera House. Of course, everyone wants to see the cute animals as well.
